Rajasthan Royals Player: Sohail Tanvir Rising star of twenty20 Cricket
October 24, 2008
He played for Champions side of Rajasthan Royals in first season of IPL. Sohail Tanvir was not a big icon player but he played a great role in the victory of Rajasthan Royals side. He is the real hero of Rajasthan Royal Champions Team.
Sohail Tanvir, born on December 12, 1984 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan is one of the emerging young talents in the world of cricket. Like most of the stars from his country he too started to play the game of cricket on the streets of his city. Ever since Tanvir entered the International arena, he has been scrutinized for his rather unconventional bowling action. Tanvir’s appearance on the International stage was nothing short of a miracle. During the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007, Tanvir was called at the eleventh hour as a replacement of ‘Rawalpindi Express’ Shoaib Akhter when he had to be sent home after he allegedly hit Mohammad Asif with a bat.
At such a big stage everybody thought that the new pacer was a misfit, when Sohail dropped Sri Lankan opener Jayasuria in his first game. But Sohail surprised many including Jayasuria when he dismissed him with an inswinger in his very first over. His weird action throughout the course of the match kept the Sri Lankan batsmen on their toes and with a natural angle into the left handers he turned out to be a handy replacement. During the T20 Championship held in South Africa Tanvir emerged as an intelligent pacer who can withstand pressure. He also showed his batting ability during his first International tournament when he stunned Indian pacer Srisanth with two sixes in the final.
Although, Pakistan lost in the final to India but it had certainly found a rare talent that can be utilized in future tournaments. After displaying great performances in the T20 World cup Sohail was signed by the Rajasthan Royals for $100,000 in the inaugural season of IPL. In India, Sohail soon repeated his good bowling form and took six wickets against Chennai Super Kings in his third game. Throughout the league, Sohail troubled batsmen with his swingers and deadly yorkers at the end of the innings. Sohail also bowls a handy slower delivery that hampered the progress of many hitters in the final overs. Sohail also chipped in with the bat and helped his team win many close ties. In the final of IPL when the Royals looked shaky while chasing a 164-run target, Sohail kept his cool and added vital 21 runs, he also hit the winning runs in that match.
Sohail ended the inaugural season of IPL clearly as the best bowler with 22 wickets in just 11 matches. But along with taking crucial wickets, Sohail also maintained a very good economy rate of 6.46, which is more than acceptable in T20 cricket. He was also presented the Purple Cap for being the leading wicket taker in IPL. Sohail changed the misconception that Twenty 20 cricket is all about batting, in fact now experts and pundits argue that the team with the best bowling attack is the favorite in this form of cricket.
At the age of 23, this tall pacer from Pakistan has a long and successful career in front of him, both for his National side and the Rajasthan Royals. In the upcoming Twenty 20 Champions League starting from December 3, he would be one player to watch with the success of Rajasthan Royals heavilly depending upon his form.
